Spring Bulb Planting: How to Create a Colourful Garden Display

Spring bulbs are one of the easiest ways to bring reliable colour back to your garden after winter. With a little preparation, you can enjoy cheerful flowers from late winter through to early summer.

When to plant spring bulbs

Most spring-flowering bulbs, including daffodils, tulips, crocuses, hyacinths and alliums, are planted in autumn. Aim to plant them between September and November, before the ground becomes hard or waterlogged. Daffodils and crocuses can be planted earlier, while tulips are often happiest going into the ground in November.

Choose the right spot

Select a position with good drainage and plenty of light. Many bulbs flower well in full sun, while snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils can also thrive beneath deciduous trees, where they receive light before the tree canopy fills out.

How to plant bulbs

  • Loosen the soil and remove weeds, stones and old roots.

  • Plant bulbs at a depth of roughly two to three times their height, with the pointed end facing upwards.

  • Space bulbs according to their mature size, or plant them closer together for a fuller display in containers.

  • Backfill gently, firm the soil and water once if the ground is dry.

  • Mark the planting area so you do not disturb the bulbs while they are dormant.

Create a longer-lasting display

For a natural look, plant bulbs in groups rather than straight lines. Combine early crocuses and snowdrops with daffodils, tulips and alliums to build a succession of colour. Planting bulbs in containers is another excellent option for patios, entrances and smaller gardens.

After flowering

Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. The leaves recharge the bulb for next year, so avoid cutting or tying them while they are still green. Remove spent flower heads if you wish, but leave the foliage in place until it has yellowed.
